Common Doubts Regarding Salafiyyah - FORWARDED ➡️

❔ Doubt 1: Allah named us 'Muslims' so why should we call ourselves anything else? This is an argument often used to discourage the use of valid terms that help clarify the proper method of understanding Islam. They cite the verse, هُوَ سَمَّاكُمُ الْمُسْلِمِينَ مِن قَبْلُ وَفِي هَٰذَا "...It is Allah Who named you Muslims (i.e., ‘the ones who submit’) in the earlier Scriptures and in this Quran..." (22:78) ✅ Response: This verse does not prove that it is prohibited to call oneself another title. Allah named us in the Quran as Mu'minun, Muttaqun, Hunafa, etc. Allah also tells us that the followers of Isa عليه السلام referred to themselves as: "Ansarullah: Allah's Helpers" قَالَ الْحَوَارِيُّونَ نَحْنُ أَنصَارُ اللَّهِ "...The Hawâriyyûn (the disciples) said: 'We are Allah’s helpers' (i.e. we will strive in His Cause!)..." (61:14) Does this now mean that the disciples were wrong? The Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم used terms like: "The Community الجماعة", "The Saved Sect الفرقة الناجية", "The Saved Group/Party of People طائفة منصورة , etc., as titles for the Muslims. All of these terms refer to the same reality - and that is following the Quran & Sunnah with the understanding of the Sahabah (i.e., Salaf Salih - the righteous predecessors). If you wanted 1 word to sum up that long beneficial sentence, you'd just simply say in Arabic: "Salafi". Just as when you say Hanafi, Malik, Shafi'ee, Hanbali to refer to your METHOD of understanding Fiqh rulings. ❔ Doubt 2: Using this term causes division, and I don't want to split the Ummah. ✅ Response: Allah splits between the truth and falsehood in the Quran. Strength and success is not in numbers, but it is adhering to the Revelation as revealed (See: The Battle of Badr). The Prophet told us that this Ummah will divide into 73 sects, and all of them will be in the fire except one; the dividing factor between the right and wrong is who adheres to the Sunnah (Tirmidhi: 2641). Allah splits between those who follow the Sunnah from those who innovate. Like when some Muslims will be prevented by Angels from drinking from the Hawd because of their religious innovations in worship (Bukhari 6576, 6584, Muslim 2297). ❔ Doubt 3: But doesn't division go against Allah's statement, وَاعْتَصِمُوا بِحَبْلِ اللَّهِ جَمِيعًا وَلَا تَفَرَّقُوا "And hold firmly together to the rope of Allah and do not be divided." (3:103)? ✅ Response: Allah says to hold firmly together to the ROPE of Allah, that means the Quran and its teachings. The Quran teaches us to follow the Sunnah (4:59, 65, 24:63) and the understanding of the Sahabah (2:137, 4:115). This verse does not mean we must unite with all Muslims, despite their theological beliefs, nor to water down our principles to please others. Have we not learned the Seerah and the reason why Surah al-Kafirun was revealed? There is no tolerance for that which is wrong. It is those who break free from this understanding who have caused division, and THEY must return back to this rope of Allah. ❔ Doubt 4: But what about the people who I've met who claim to be Salafi? I don't like how they behave. ✅ Response: Those few do not represent every person who adheres to Salafiyyah. Is it correct to generalize an entire race or nation because a few, or the many people who you've personally met, cheat, steal, kill, have poor hygiene, are racist? No, see: 49:11. There are extreme people who ascribe to Islam, but commit acts of terror. Does that now mean Islam is wrong? No, they are the ones in the wrong and Islam remains the truth. Likewise, some individuals claim to be "Salafi" but lack knowledge, wisdom, manners, and/or adherence to the true methodology - this doesn't affect Salafiyyah. The term "Salafi" describes a method of understanding Islam—it's not about mere labels or group affiliations to a masjid, people, or speakers. I've met Salafis with the best character and manners; a few bad apples do not represent the majority or reality.
