Ibnul-Qayyim (رحمه الله) said: "He (Shaytan) observes your soul closely to see which trait dominates: courage and determination, or hesitation and weakness. If he sees that you're timid and hesitant, he makes you lazy, weakens your drive to obey Allah, and makes the act feel heavy and difficult — until you eventually give it up or do it carelessly. But if he sees that you're brave and ambitious, he tells you that what you're doing isn’t enough, that you need to do more, exaggerate, and overdo it — until you go beyond the limits. As one of the early scholars said: "There is no command from Allah except that the devil tries to drag you one of two ways: either to neglect and fall short, or to go overboard and be extreme — and he doesn’t care which one he gets you with."
