Watering Down of Jarḥ by Dismantling the Principles Set by the Salaf (Part 2)

Sheikh Abdulḥamīd Az-Zu'kari hafidahullāh wrote: لا نجعل خلافنا في غيرنا سببا للخلاف بيننا: Let Us Not Allow Our Differences Regarding Others Become a Cause of Division Among Ourselves: This is one of the innovated principles introduced by ‘Ali Al-Halabi—may Allāh guide him (this book was authored before he passed away)—which he promoted in his book “The Manhaj of the Salaf in Weighing Benefits and Removing Harms in the Foundations of Criticism, Jarḥ, and Advice.”(1) Under this principle, a great deal of harm finds its way in. One person defends At-Tūrabi, another defends Al-Qaraḍhāwi, and so on—and yet you are expected not to differ with them. However, the Salaf said about Ibn Ad-Dukhshun: «ما نرى وده وحديثه إلا مع المنافقين» “We see his affection and speech inclined only to the hypocrites,” as recorded in the hadith of ‘Itbān in Sahih al-Bukhari (424) and Sahih Muslim (33). Sheikh Ahmad An-Najmi—may Allāh have mercy on him—said: “Upon what basis are we to unite? Is it not upon the truth? Of course it is. If someone opposes the truth, it is first incumbent upon us to advise him and clarify matters. If he returns to the truth, then all is well; otherwise, we must consider him an outlier. If someone then supports him and aids him in his falsehood, we must also denounce the supporter and distance ourselves from him—especially if the innovation is clear and harmful, like the innovation of the Khawarij. It is impermissible to withhold condemnation of those who dilute the religion under the pretense of preserving unity.” Such statements by those who promote Tamyee’ ultimately lead to the glorification and veneration of the people of innovation. The Salaf of the past clearly stated: «من أيد صاحب بدعة فقد أعان على هدم الإسلام» “Whoever supports an innovator has aided in the destruction of Islam,” as is well established in the classical works of the Salaf.
