BENEFIT 420: Watering Down of Jarḥ by Dismantling the Principles Set by the Salaf (Part 1)

Sheikh Abdulḥamīd Az-Zu'kari hafidahullāh wrote: It is well known that the noble Salaf—may Allāh be pleased with them—transmitted this religion to us as it was revealed by Allāh the Exalted and conveyed by the Messenger of Allāh ﷺ. They preserved it in their hearts, documented it in their writings, and established its foundational principles. Among these principles are the guidelines for jarḥ (criticism) against those unqualified to carry or transmit religious reports, or to listen to them, as well as criticism of the people of innovation and deviation. However, this manhaj of Tamyee’ has emerged, undermining and dismantling those authentic Salafi principles, replacing them with weak, innovated principles. Below are some of the innovations introduced in this regard. I mention this to teach the ignorant, remind the heedless, and to guide to what is right: 1. One of the sayings introduced by some is: نصحح ولا نجرح “We correct, and do not criticise” or نصحح ولا نهدم “We correct, and do not destroy.” This innovated principle has caused many—despite their awareness of the errors and deviations of those who oppose the true methodology and upright path—to remain silent about them and their falsehoods, even as these individuals actively promote fitnah. For instance, Al-Halabi praises Al-Huwaini, Al-‘Ar‘ūr, Muhammad Hassan, Al-Maghrāwī, and Al-Ma‘ribī, despite being well aware of their errors and deviations. Yet, as the man is like a confused sheep between two flocks, having layed down this principle inherited from the people of innovation and acting upon it, it is no surprise that such behaviour is seen from him. This is but one example of the numerous instances where this principle has been applied—a principle that undermines the principle of walā’ wa al-barā’, the obligation to declare innovators as such, to deem the corrupt as corrupt, and to maintain distinction and clarity in creed and conduct. Know, O seeker of truth, that the One who elevates and abases is Allāh alone. A man once said to the Messenger of Allāh ﷺ: “Indeed, my praise beautifies and my criticism disfigures.” He replied: “That is for Allah.” Therefore, it is incumbent upon the Muslim to be wary of falsehood, its adherents, and those who associate with and follow them.
