BENEFIT 416: Seek not treatment for the body at the expense of your heart

Sheikh Yahya hafidahullah said: Travelling to non-Muslim countries undoubtedly requires sound knowledge to ward off doubts and a strong religious conscience to restrain desires. If the patient or the one intending to travel—be it for treatment or for da'wah—possesses these qualities, then perhaps he may be safe. However, if he lacks such qualities, it is preferable that he seeks treatment within Muslim lands, so he does not heal his body at the expense of killing or corrupting his heart. As the saying goes: "He who seeks refuge in ‘Amr during his distress is like one seeking escape from the scorching heat by entering the fire." Therefore, if he is able to receive treatment in a Muslim country, he should not travel to non-Muslim lands. However, if he is compelled due to the unavailability of the required treatment in Muslim countries, and he possesses knowledge and piety, then he may travel. But if he lacks knowledge and piety, it is better for him to be patient than to risk his soul or expose himself to harm. He should wait, as much as possible, to seek treatment in a way that does not endanger his religion.
