Sheikh Ibn Bāz, may Allāh have mercy on him, said:

"معناه صحيح، وحديث واثلة وشواهده قد تقوى على الحُسْن، لكن حتى لو ما صح فيه حديث هو داخل في إيذاء المؤمن."
"The meaning is correct...and even if the ḥadīth is not authentic, it (i.e. mocking a Muslim for a sin they committed) would still fall under abusing a believer."

Allāh ﷻ said:
{وَٱلَّذِینَ یُؤۡذُونَ ٱلۡمُؤۡمِنِینَ وَٱلۡمُؤۡمِنَـٰتِ بِغَیۡرِ مَا ٱكۡتَسَبُوا۟ فَقَدِ ٱحۡتَمَلُوا۟ بُهۡتَـٰنࣰا وَإِثۡمࣰا مُّبِینࣰا}
"As for those who abuse believing men and women unjustifiably, they will definitely bear the guilt of slander and blatant sin."
[Sūrah Al-Aḥzāb 58]
