BENEFIT 407: Don't let emotions and attachments get the better of you

2 April 2025 • 1.76K views
A Muslim is required to adhere to the Qur'ān and Sunnah and should not be guided by emotion alone. Relying solely on emotions can lead to accepting false beliefs, remaining silent in the face of falsehood, and even approving of it. For this reason, when one examines the path of the early believers, it becomes evident that they were not driven by mere emotion. This is illustrated in the ḥadīth recorded by Al-Bukhari (6788) and Muslim (1688), in which ’Ā'ishah (may Allāh be pleased with her) narrated that when a woman from the Makhzūm tribe committed theft and people sought intercession for her through Usāmah ibn Zayd, the Prophet ﷺ became angry and said: ((لَو أَنَّ فَاطِمَةَ بِنتَ مُحَمَّدٍ سَرَقَت لَقَطَعتُ يَدَهَا)) “By Allāh, if Fāṭimah, the daughter of Muḥammad, were to steal, I would cut off her hand.” Thus, emotion is one thing, and the rulings of the Shari’ah are another. Do not incline toward Hizbiyyah merely because your companion or even your parents belong to a Hizbi group. Do not incline toward Tamyee' because your teacher is a mumayyi'. Do not incline towards weak opinions because the institute you study at endorses weak opinions. Do not become averse to the Sunnah and the methodology of the Salaf because you had a bad experience with an individual ascribing to the Sunnah. Do not hate Salafiyyah because your ex-husband was Salafi. This is neither religiously nor rationally acceptable—so be mindful!
