BENEFIT 403: Tasweer is a practice of the insincere and a custom of disbelievers who lack divine motivation

Sheikh Albani: The Messenger of Allāh ﷺ spoke the truth when he said: “You will surely follow the ways of those who came before you, step by step and inch by inch, such that if they were to enter a lizard’s hole, you would follow them.” We have previously stated that the nature of disbelievers and disbelief itself is that they do not work for the sake of Allah Almighty. Unlike Muslims, they do not possess divine guidance and motivation through revelation. Thus, they find Tasweer appealing and use it as a means of encouragement, attracting attention, and other similar purposes. This is similar to what they call acting, where they perform theatrical representations of certain narratives. Even when these narratives claim to serve the public interest rather than harm society, they still fall into the same category. This is distinct from other types of dramatisation that revolve around immoral content, such as those related to illicit desires. In reality, they rely on such dramatisations because they lack the Qur’an and Prophetic traditions that offer guidance through encouragement (targheeb) and deterrence (tarheeb). These divine teachings suffice us, preventing us from following the ways of those before us. Furthermore, another issue must be considered: today, regrettably, the Muslim world seeks sympathy from powerful nations, even if they are adversaries. The type of Tasweer you inquired about, in my view, falls into this category. However, a Muslim is never required to submit or be subjugated to non-Muslims. We ask Allah Almighty to grant us wisdom and to guide us in adhering to the teachings of our Prophet ﷺ in all aspects of our lives. ____ It is quite astonishing that the very individual who posed this question to Sheikh Al-Albani (may Allāh have mercy on him), and directly heard from him this insightful response, later joined those who engage in Tasweer and publish their images and recorded videos! Whoever observes with insight and reflects upon the current state of most people—particularly Du'aat—regarding Tasweer, as well as their general condition, will witness remarkable instances of how Allah turns hearts. One will see the paradox of affirming a principle in theory, refuting doubts surrounding it, and then acting contrary to it in practice.
