BENEFIT 387: None of the Sahabah earned a livelihood through begging

Sheikh Al-Islām Ibn Taymiyyah, may Allāh have mercy upon him described the Sahabah, saying: «ولم يكن في الصحابة لا أهل الصفة ولا غيرهم من يتخذ مسألة الناس، ولا الإلحاف في المسألة بالكدية، والشحاذة لا بالزنبيل ولا غيره صناعة وحرفة، بحيث لا يبتغي الرزق إلا بذلك، كما لم يكن في الصحابة أيضا أهل فضول من الأموال يتركون، لا يؤدون الزكاة ولا ينفقون أموالهم في سبيل الله، ولا يعطون في النوائب‏.‏ بل هذان الصنفان الظالمان المصران على الظلم الظاهر، من مانعي الزكاة، والحقوق الواجبة، والمتعدين حدود الله تعالى في أخذ أموال الناس كانا معدومين في الصحابة المثنى عليهم» "Among the Sahabah, including Ahl As-Suffah and others, there was no one who made begging or persistently asking people for help a profession or means of livelihood, whether by carrying a basket or any other method. Likewise, there were no one among them who accumulated excess wealth without fulfilling their obligations—neither paying zakat, spending in the way of Allāh, nor supporting others in times of need. Both of these unjust groups—those who refused to give zakat and fulfill their obligatory dues, and those who wrongfully took people’s wealth—were completely absent among the Sahabah, who were known for their righteousness and praiseworthy character."
