Strive Throughout the Last Ten Nights—Not Just the Odd Ones!
Sheikh Al-Islam Ibn Taymiyyah (raḥimahullāh) was asked about the best time to seek Laylatul Qadr. He responded (paraphrasing):
"Laylatul Qadr occurs within the last ten nights of Ramaḍhān, as is authentically reported from the Prophet ﷺ, who said:
"Seek Laylatul Qadr in the last ten nights of Ramaḍhān." [Reported by Bukhāri & Muslim on the authority of ‘Ā'ishah -raḍhiyallāhu ‘anhā]
In another narration from Bukhāri, the Prophet ﷺ specified:
"Seek Laylatul Qadr on the odd nights of the last ten nights of Ramaḍān."
There are two ways to determine the odd nights:
1️⃣ Counting from the beginning of Ramaḍān – Laylatul Qadr could fall on the 21st, 23rd, 25th, 27th, or 29th night.
2️⃣ Counting from the end of Ramaḍān – The Prophet ﷺ said:
"Seek Laylatul Qadr in the last ten nights of Ramaḍān: on the night when nine, seven, or five nights remain." [Reported by Bukhāri on the authority of Ibn Abbās -raḍhiyallāhu ‘anhumā]
According to this method, if Ramaḍān has 30 days, Laylatul Qadr may fall on an even night:
- The 22nd night (when 9 remain)
- The 24th night (when 7 remain)
- The 26th night (when 5 remain)
This was the understanding of Abū Sa‘īd Al-Khudri (raḍhiyallāhu ‘anhu), as narrated in Ṣaḥīḥ Muslim.
If Ramaḍhān has 29 days, both methods of calculation align.
Given this, a believer should exert themselves in worship throughout all ten nights, not just the odd ones. This was the practice of the Prophet ﷺ, as ‘Ā’ishah (raḍhiyallāhu ‘anhā) reported:
"When the last ten nights of Ramaḍān began, the Prophet ﷺ would tighten his waistcloth (i.e., devote himself fully to worship), spend the nights in worship, and wake his family." [Reported by Bukhāri & Muslim]
