BENEFIT 365: Pointing out a scholar's mistake, regardless of their stature, is not an act of disrespect!

Sheikh Ibn Bāz (may Allāh have mercy on him) said: «إذا قام الدليل على مسألة من المسائل، وجب الأخذ بما قام عليه الدليل من كتاب الله أو سنة رسوله ﷺ، وإن خالف إماما كبيرا، بل وإن خالف بعض الصحابة، فالله يقول: ﴿فإن تنازعتم في شيء فردوه إلى الله والرسول﴾ ولم يقل سبحانه: ردوه إلى فلان أو فلان. لكن لا بد من التثبت واحترام أهل العلم، والتأدب معهم، فإذا وجد المرء قولا ضعيفا عن أحد الأئمة أو العلماء أو المحدثين المعتبرين، فإن ذلك لا ينقص من قدرهم، وعليه أن يحترم أهل العلم، والتأدب معهم، ويتكلم بالكلام الطيب، ولا يسبهم ولا يحتقرهم، ولكن يبين الحق بالدليل مع دعائه للعالم، والترحم عليه، وسؤال الله أن يعفو عنه. هكذا يجب أن تكون أخلاق أهل العلم مع أهل العلم: يقدرون أهل العلم لمكانتهم، ويعرفون لهم قدرهم ومحلهم وفضلهم» "If evidence is established regarding a particular matter, it becomes obligatory to follow that evidence from the Book of Allāh or the Sunnah of His Messenger ﷺ, even if it contradicts the opinion of a great Imām or even some of the Companions. For Allāh says: 'And if you disagree over anything, refer it to Allāh and the Messenger' [An-Nisā' 4:59], and He did not say: ‘Refer it to so-and-so.’ However, one must exercise caution, show respect for scholars, and observe proper etiquette with them. If a person comes across a weak opinion attributed to an esteemed Imām, scholar, or Muḥaddith, this does not diminish their status. Rather, he should respect scholars, speak with kindness, and refrain from insulting or belittling them. Instead, he should clarify the truth with evidence while praying for the scholar, seeking Allāh’s mercy for him, and asking Allāh to forgive him. This is the proper etiquette that scholars should uphold toward one another—they honour scholars for their status, acknowledge their rank and virtue, and appreciate their contributions."
