Allāh ﷻ said: ﴿إِنَّمَا ٱلۡحَیَوٰةُ ٱلدُّنۡیَا لَعِبࣱ وَلَهۡوࣱۚ وَإِن تُؤۡمِنُوا۟ وَتَتَّقُوا۟ یُؤۡتِكُمۡ أُجُورَكُمۡ وَلَا یَسۡـَٔلۡكُمۡ أَمۡوَ ٰلَكُمۡ﴾ "This worldly life is no more than play and amusement. But if you are faithful and mindful ˹of Allāh˺, He will grant you your ˹full˺ reward, and will not ask you ˹to donate all˺ your wealth." [Sūrah Muḥammad: 36] ﴿إِن یَسۡـَٔلۡكُمُوهَا فَیُحۡفِكُمۡ تَبۡخَلُوا۟ وَیُخۡرِجۡ أَضۡغَـٰنَكُمۡ﴾ "If He were to do so and pressure you, you would withhold and He would bring out your resentment." [Sūrah Muḥammad: 37] Ibn Kathīr raḥimahullāh commented: "That is, He (ﷻ) is independent of you and does not require anything from you. Rather, He has prescribed charity from your wealth as a means of assisting your poor brothers so that its benefits may return to you, and its rewards may ultimately be for your own good. Then He says: {If He were to ask you for it and press you, you would withhold, and He would expose your resentment} Qatādah said: «قَدْ عَلِمَ اللهُ أَنَّ فِي إِخْرَاجِ الْأَمْوَالِ إِخْرَاجُ الْأَضْغَانِ» "Allāh knows that giving wealth reveals the grudges within hearts." Qatādah spoke the truth, for wealth is beloved to people, and they do not part with it except for something they love even more." [Tafsīr Ibn Kathīr] The poet said: لا تسألن بني آدم حاجة *** وسل الذي أبوابه لا تحجب Do not ask the children of Ādam for anything, But ask the One whose doors are never closed. الله يغضب إن تركت سؤاله *** وبني آدم حين يسأل يغضب Allāh becomes angry when you stop asking Him, While the children of Ādam grow angry when asked. Sheikh ’Uthaymeen raḥimahullāh explained: "The children of Ādam, if you ask them for even the slightest thing, become annoyed and weary. The first time, they may meet you with a decent expression; the second time, their face darkens; the third time, they may shout at you; and the fourth time, if possible, they might even strike you. But Allāh, the Almighty, loves those who persist in supplication. The more you plead with Him, the more He loves you. Indeed, the difference is absolute in every aspect."
