BENEFIT: The principle consists of two parts:
10 March 2025 • 1.14K views
1. We cooperate in what we agree upon
2. We excuse each other in what we differ over
Regarding the First Part:
Sheikh Albani, may Allāh have mercy on him, stated:
"We have no doubt that part of this statement is correct, namely: ‘We cooperate in what we agree upon.’ The first part of the statement is, of course, derived from the words of Allah: ‘And cooperate in righteousness and piety.’"
Similarly, Sheikh Ibn Baz, may Allah have mercy on him, said:
"Yes, we must cooperate in matters upon which we agree, such as supporting the truth, calling to it, and warning against what Allah and His Messenger have forbidden."
Note: This part is only valid if the agreement is based on the truth. Cooperation based on falsehood is impermissible, as Sheikh Al-’Uthaymeen explained:
"The statement ‘We excuse one another in matters of disagreement, and we support one another in matters of agreement’ is not correct in its absolute sense. If the truth in a matter is clear and evident, then we do not excuse those who oppose it. Therefore, if the agreement is based on falsehood, cooperation in this aspect is impermissible."
Regarding the Second Part:
Sheikh Muqbil Ibn Hadi Al-Wadi’ee said: "This is incorrect, because Allāh, the Almighty, says in His Noble Book: 'And whatever you differ in—its ruling is to Allāh.' This principle cannot be applied to matters where the truth is evident. Some differences are not excusable according to the Shari'ah."
Note: This part of the principle may be applied in specific cases as explained by Sheikh Albani:
"As for the phrase ‘We excuse one another,’ it must be subject to certain conditions. When we advise someone who has erred, we present the evidence to them. If they remain unconvinced but sincere, we leave them to their own judgment while cooperating in areas of agreement. However, if they persist in their obstinacy and arrogance, then the principle does not apply."
