FACT: Unlike the divine texts—the Qur'ān and the authentic Sunnah—which are free from any real contradiction, human speech, including that of scholars, is not infallible and may contain inconsistencies. A scholar’s opinions on a single issue may vary due to different considerations of preference that emerge over time, as well as changing circumstances and contextual factors. It is well known that Imam Ahmad had differing narrations on various issues, and Imam Ash-Shafi‘i had both earlier and later opinions on many matters. The same applies to other esteemed scholars.
HOWEVER ‼️
Instead of pitting the two fatwas against each other, we can reconcile them based on the following conclusions:
▪️Donations should not be solicited during the khutbah.
▪️Requests for donations should not become a regular practice to the extent that they turn into a hallmark of Jumu'ah.
▪️Donations should only be sought in cases of necessity (such as a collapsed roof, not enough money to cover the rent, etc.) and when all other means, such as seeking assistance from charitable individuals privately, have been exhausted.
▪️In such cases, donations may be requested either before or after the khutbah, but not during it!
