Begging can be categorised into two types, and both are blameworthy:
First type: Directly begging for oneself.
For example: "Give me," "I need," etc.
This is clearly haram, and I’m sure we both agree on that.
Second type: Indirectly begging for oneself.
For example:
- Claiming "the masjid needs..." while being the Imam who will receive a salary from this collection.
- Saying "the village needs a borehole..." while being the company that will oversee this borehole project.
- Mentioning "the masjid needs a nursery, nikah service, filming studio..." while earning a salary from these ventures.
- I see this example being shared around quite often. It's written by the one selling the course: "We currently have over 35 students requesting scholarships to attend the upcoming program on... and are waiting for sponsorship. Help them learn, and may Allah accept and assist you in your affairs. This is the best and easiest investment you can make for your Hereafter, as good deeds multiply quickly on the Day when people will wish they had done more good deeds."
▪️This second type reminds me of the ways of the Jews, concerning whom the Prophet ﷺ said:
((قَاتَلَ اللهُ الْيَهُودَ، إِنَّ اللهَ لَمَّا حَرَّمَ شُحُومَهَا جَمَلُوهُ ثُمَّ بَاعُوهُ فَأَكَلُوا ثَمَنَهُ))
"May Allāh curse the Jews, for when Allah made the fat (of animals) illegal for them, they melted it, sold it, and ate its price." [Reported by Bukhari & Muslim from the hadith of Jabir]
EXCEPTION: A person is permitted to ask out of necessity, or if they fall under the circumstances described in this ḥadīth ⤵️
