Question: What are the Islamic guidelines for public condemnation, and when is public condemnation permissible? What is the Salafi Manhaj in this regard?
Sheikh Ibn Baz rahimahullah:
Public condemnation becomes permissible when the sin is openly manifested. If the sin is manifested openly in society, such as in the markets, the press/media, it is clarified. In such cases, it is appropriate to clarify and say: “I read in such-and-such newspaper” or “I saw such-and-such act,” and then explain that this action is prohibited. For example, Allāh has forbidden backbiting, slander, and usury. When something becomes public, it is obligatory to condemn it, as this falls under cooperation in righteousness and piety.
This also aligns with Allāh's statement (interpreted meaning): “You are the best nation produced for mankind. You enjoin what is right and forbid what is wrong and believe in Allah” [Qur’an 3:110].
It also corresponds to His saying (interpreted meaning): “The believing men and believing women are allies of one another. They enjoin what is right and forbid what is wrong” [Qur’an 9:71].
And it relates to His saying (interpreted meaning): “And who is better in speech than one who invites to Allah?” [Qur’an 41:33].
However, this should be done with kind words and good expressions, accompanied by a sincere invitation for the person involved to achieve guidance and righteousness, and to improve their intentions. The language used should be suitable, providing proper guidance and advice while refuting falsehood. Additionally, prayers should be made for the one who has erred, asking Allāh to guide them and grant them success in following the truth. Yes.
