BENEFIT 317: Telling lies to make others laugh

20 January 2025 • 2.44K views
Sheikh Ibn Baz rahimahullah said: It is not permissible for a Muslim, whether male or female, to lie, even in jest. The Prophet ﷺ said: ((وَيْلٌ لِلَّذِي يُحَدِّثُ فَيَكْذِبُ لِيُضْحِكَ بِهِ الْقَوْمَ، وَيْلٌ لَهُ، وَيْلٌ لَهُ)) "Woe to the one who speaks falsehood to make people laugh. Woe to him, woe to him." [Reported by Abu Dawood (4990) on the authority of Bahz ibn Hakīm, from his father, from his father; graded as sound (ḥasan) by Sheikh Al-Albani in Sahih Abu Dawood (4990)] This is a severe warning; "woe" refers to severe punishment. The Prophet ﷺ emphasised: "Woe to the one who speaks falsehood to make people laugh. Woe to him, woe to him." Therefore, it is obligatory for you, dear brother, to be cautious of this, and it is likewise obligatory for every Muslim and Muslimah to avoid it. Lying is evil, and one must refrain from it both in serious matters and in jest.
