BENEFIT 283: Precision Is Required In Everything –Especially Refutations

Al-Ḥāfidh Ibn Ḥajar raḥimahullāh states: «إن الذي يتصدى لضبط الوقائع من الأقوال والأفعال والرجال، يلزمه التحري في النقل، فلا يجزم إلا بما يتحققه، ولا يكتفي بالقول الشائع، ولا سيما إن ترتب على ذلك مفسدة من الطعن في حق أحد من أهل العلم والصلاح، وإن كان في الواقعة أمرٌ فادح، سواء كان قولاً أو فعلاً أو موقفًا في حق المستور، فينبغي أن لا يبالغ في إفشائه، ويكتفي بالإشارة؛ لئلا يكون وقعت منه فلتة؛ ولذلك يحتاج المسلم أن يكون عارفًا بمقادير الناس وأحوالهم ومنازلهم، فلا يرفع الوضيع، ولا يضع الرفيع » "Whoever undertakes the task of documenting statements, actions, and individuals must exercise care in reporting accurately. One should not assert anything without verification, nor rely solely on common hearsay, particularly when it could result in unjust harm to the reputation of a person of knowledge and righteousness. If an incident involves a grave error—whether a statement, action, or position involving a person of generally sound character—then it is wise not to overemphasise its disclosure, and a mere indication of the matter may suffice, as it may have been an isolated lapse. Therefore, a Muslim needs to be aware of people's varying statuses, circumstances, and ranks, so as not to elevate the lowly or lower the esteemed." ['ذيل التبر المسبوك' للسخاوي ص (٤)]
